How to File an RTI (Right to Information)
A step-by-step guide to filing an RTI application online to seek information from any government department.
Step 1: Visit the Official RTI Portal
Go to the official government portal: https://rtionline.gov.in/
Step 2: Submit Request
Click on "Submit Request" on the homepage. Read and accept the guidelines.
Step 3: Select Department
Select the Ministry/Department/Apex body you want to seek information from.
Step 4: Fill Personal Details
Provide your name, address, educational status, and contact details.
Step 5: Draft your RTI Application
Write your questions clearly and precisely in the text box provided. Keep it under 3000 characters. You can also upload a supporting PDF document.
Step 6: Make Payment
Pay the nominal fee of ₹10 (using UPI, Internet Banking, or Credit/Debit card). Citizens below the poverty line (BPL) are exempt from this fee.
Step 7: Save Registration Number
After successful submission, you will receive a registration number via SMS and email. Keep this safe to track the status of your RTI.
