Your Fundamental Legal Rights

Right to Safety

Protection against the marketing of goods and services which are hazardous to life and property.

Right to Information

The right to be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard, and price of goods to protect the consumer against unfair trade practices.

Right to Seek Redressal

The right to seek legal remedy against unfair trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation by filing a complaint in District, State, or National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions.

What to Do (Immediate Actions)

  • Always ask for and retain the original bill/invoice for any purchase.
  • Issue a formal legal notice to the seller/service provider demanding rectification before approaching the court.
  • Register a grievance on the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) or via the e-Daakhil portal for faster resolution.

What NOT to Do

  • Do not ignore the warranty/guarantee terms and conditions.
  • Do not delay filing a complaint; the limitation period is generally two years from the date the cause of action arose.

Whom to Report & The Process

Authority: National Consumer Helpline (NCH)

Process: First level of reporting. Call or use their portal to register a grievance against the company. They will mediate.

Contact / Portal: Call 1915 or visit consumerhelpline.gov.in

Authority: Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission

Process: If NCH mediation fails, file a formal legal complaint online via e-Daakhil. Select District Commission (claims up to ₹50 Lakh), State (₹50L to ₹2Cr), or National (above ₹2Cr).
